Episode 9: Kevin Doherty
Long Term Athlete Development. When it comes to developing kids into world championship level competitors, Kevin Doherty, the head coach of Hassle Free Barbell, is one of the best. In episode 9 of Coaches Tuck Radio, Don discusses with Kevin what Long Term Athlete Development means to him.
It would be hard to find another coach in the country that has worked with more athletes from day 1 as a young kid to a world championship level athlete over the past 10+ years than Kevin.
Kevin discusses how recruiting and talent selection is ultimately a numbers game. Out of all the kids that Kevin works with yearly, only about 1% of the athletes end up making it to the international level.
While we typically hear about the X’s and O’s to developing athletes, Kevin takes a more personal approach to Long Term Athlete Development. To him, the key to developing an athlete from the youth to senior level is life balance. It may seem contrarian to some, but in Kevin’s experience, the more an athlete focuses on things outside of the sport like school, work, relationships, etc., the better the performance on the platform is.
Additionally, building trust and faith with your athletes is essential to success – a common theme with most of our guests on the podcast.
